I am an artist who lives in northern New Mexico, one of the prettiest spots on earth. The landscape has inspired so many artists before me- and I could not resist the call.

Katy KorkosMy primary medium is fiber, often taking the form of quilts. I love layering- and no matter what medium I work in, layering is always a part of the process. I also draw, paint, write, make paper, make collages with paper and with cloth, create journals, and make handmade books. I hand-dye much of the cloth I use in my work.

Quilts have been a major form of self-expression for me since I began with making traditional quilts in 1973. I don’t like knowing how a piece will come out, and I’m really bad at following patterns- even my very first quilt was modified several times before it was done. In the ’90s I discovered studio art quilts, thanks to some visionary artists like Yvonne Porcella and Katie Pasquini-Masopust.

I’m inspired by conversations and collaborations with fellow artists, by the forms of nature (particularly trees and birds and water), and by pieces of handwork that I find in antique stores.

I love walking with my dog Sophie. I do some of my best thinking when we’re on the trail.
